Halloween is a very serious ordeal at the Arbors and my all time favorite holiday. As the Recreation Director for the community, that meant it was my show to produce. I still remember when my boss called me into a meeting to discuss the theme for the 2018 year. I almost fell off my chair when he said ¨You may think this is too extreme but I´ve always wanted to do Michael Jackson´s Thriller¨. I immediately stood up and said Amen, for I was a professional zombie and I could do the Thriller dance in my sleep. Getting the opportunity to put together this production for the residents was truly magical for all of us, especially for me; choreographing this number and getting together to secretly practice in the alley behind the building was priceless . For some of my co-workers, this was the first time they had ever learned a dance and done a performance in full costume. My boss went to Bed, Bath and Beyond on his lunch break to buy a pillow just because he wanted to show off the zombie make-up I did. And the residents were so unbelievably happy to be a part of it. The elderly don´t just want to watch from the sides, they want to be included in the show too. Finally found my way back to art so I set up my house like a gallery and invited my friends over for an Opening! My interactive exhibit tells the story of my development as an artist and the wisdom I found when I finally let go and gave in to my gifts. It takes the viewer on a journey, prompting all kinds of deep thoughts and questions hoping to inspire people to voyage through their own depths. The exhibit even inspired the incredible poet and friend, Jim Gover, to create 2 works of art of his own! I am so ready to change the world with my art! From my days as Ballroom dance instructor at Inikori Dance Studio, under the tutelage of the great Jonah Inilori. It was here that I learned to dance as the leader, the role the male usually dances. I could already talk like a man and this is where I learned to dance like one. There was nobody that walked through the studio doors that I could not teach. When my student Emma came to me with the idea for this tango, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to showcase my ability to lead on the dance floor. When the legendary Buddha Stretch (Emilio Austin Jr.) says ¨who wants to come up on stage and play a little game?¨ you just shoot your hand up, no questions. So that´s what I did. Before anybody else´s hand went up we locked eyes and he called me up. Passing that dance energy back and forth was marvelous. It is possible to listen and respond using only our bodies. I really wanted our first dance to be about us and how much fun we have together. I also knew that I wanted it to be a special experience that we could share with our closest friends and family- what better way to do that than with a flash mob! Thank you to everyone who participated in making this the most memorable performance of our lives :) And most of all, thank you Alejandro for loving me enough to undergo the adventure of creating and dancing this choreography. When the pain from my uterine fibroid left me confined to the couch, this was the only way I could dance. These were the moments that kept me alive long enough until I was able to have the surgery to have it removed. To my sister Rosalias, who stayed with me for 2 weeks while I was at my worst: thank you, that visit- you with your cebolla hair doo- saved my life. I was living for this song!
