Feel My Heart: A Poetry Collection, Book
Jim Gover, Poet, Comic & Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
July 2023
I was standing in a really long line at a department store when the telephone conversation took place that gave way to this book. I worked with the author to curate and categorize the poems for the book. I created original paintings to be featured in the chapter pages and I designed a manuscript that was easy to enjoy, like the poems. Along with the book, matching postcards were created for him to take with him on his book talks. Once upon a time, a man had a dream to publish a poetry book. All it took was him having the courage to say his dream out loud to the right person.

Resident Council Meeting Note-taker
The Arbors Assisted Living Communities at Westbury
August 2018-March 2020
Every month the residents of the community gathered to discuss their concerns, comments and suggestions regarding the life happenings and activities of the community. When the residents asked me if I would volunteer to take down their meeting notes, it was easy for me to say yes. They needed someone who could write fast and keep up with the live conversations as they were taking place. Afterwards I typed the minutes and shared them with the community’s executive team and the residents.
Legal Secretary
Read-Iglesias Lopes Household
April 2017 - Present
The minute I met my Husband, I started studying the intricacies of immigration laws and what it would take for this man to eventually become an American citizen. Gathering the documents and preparing the paperwork for our immigration application is what gave me the confidence to find the evidence needed in a case raised against me by an ex-employee; the claim was dismissed because of what I submitted. I never expected to be in court after that but I have been there for not one, not two, but five additional cases. Each time, I have prepared a binder of evidence and because of the truths the papers have displayed, I have prevailed. When I walk into the court house, people think I am a lawyer because of the way that I walk in. There is no need to be afraid of the law when you are the truth and nothing but the truth and you have the papers to show it.
Ghost Writer
Z. B. l Development Coach & Author
May 2016- June 2017
I had already been assisting the author with his online articles on personal development when came to me with the 10 documents. Some of them had sentences that were half a page long. There were floating thoughts, experiences and theories all meshed together. The author was still also writing parts of the book when we began the editing process. I had to create the skeleton for the book from scratch. Although at first, turning everything into a respectable book manuscript seemed like an impossible task, by the end all the ideas and words were categorized, polished and arranged into proper chapters. Although the book was never published and I received no pay, this experience served as the training I needed to complete to be able to classify, distribute and give physical shape to any ideas floating in the mind.

June 1991
One of my earliest memories is of someone helping me to sit on the kitchen countertop and asking me to sit very still so they could draw me. During that time, the house was often full of students waiting on my Mother to sew their school uniform. I used to think my Godmother was the one who drew me, but when I got older I asked her and she said she was not the one who drew me. It’s possible it was just one of the students. Even though I can’t remember who drew me, I remember sitting very still wondering what it would look like when the person finished making lines on the paper. I will always remember the moment I saw the result- it was me. It was the same me I had seen in the mirror. It was the me that lived in the paper.

A deeper look behind some of my first commissions...
"Mother of Roses", Oil Painting
Personal Commission
August 2005
For my mother's birthday, I painted a portrait of her surrounded by roses. It was the first painting I had ever made for someone. My brother and I went to the restaurant where she worked to surprise her. He brought his guitar and was ready to serenade her. I knew my mother loved the painting because she cried when she saw it. She then put it on display for everyone at her job to see and I knew my mother was proud. As soon as people walked in they knew my mother was loved because someone took the time to paint her so beautifully. They marveled at the painting while I sat from afar watching. When they asked who did it, my mom pointed at the creepy child in the corner of the restaurant and said "my incredible daughter", and then she would motion me to come over and say hello. Even though she knew I did not talk when I was around people, my mother always found a way to include me.
"Dejeuner Du Matin", Acrylic Painting
Personal Commission
May 2005
For one of our final projects in french class, we were assigned the task of creating an addition for Jacques Prevert's poem "Dejeuner Du Matin". I decided to create a black painting depicting visuals from the the original poem with the letters of the verses written in white carefully on one side showcasing the blended poem. If you did not know the original, you would not know the ending had been changed because it mimicked the same pattern of the famous poem. The words had been perfectly stiched together to follow the same tempo. When I unveiled it to the class, it was as if I was in my own private art opening. No one else had made a painting. The teacher was so moved that I would take the time to make such a masterpiece for her class. I had never felt such prestige. She asked if she could keep it to show her future pupils that would come after me. Gladly I said yes. Even though my family was not there to share in this moment, I felt proud of what I had done and that was enough. Long after my physical body was to be gone, my heart and my essence would forever remain in that french class within that painting.
"La Piscina De La Casa De Santo Domingo", Pool
Family Commission
July 2003
I still remember the day my father came to me with the design he had carefully drawn on a piece of paper for this pool. Our summer vacation would be over in two weeks but we decided to give it our best shot. It did not matter that our hands were smaller, my brother and I knew how to use the shovels like the adults. We knew how to dig, we knew how to mix, we knew how to move the shovel as if it were one big claw. Everyday we woke up at the beginning of the morning to mix concrete. Even with the blazing sun hitting our backs, we knew the rewards would last longer than these moments in the fire. My father, my father's father, my brother & I built this pool with our bare hands and the hands of a few friends not that much older than us. It did not matter that time only allowed for us to enjoy the pool while it was unpainted and at half water capacity, we were able to bathe on that last day of our vacation. We were all so amazed to be floating in a spot where just two weeks before we were standing. We were so proud that we had created a new reality for ourselves with our bare hands. My family, my family's family, neighbors and friends, and criters of the community have been enjoying the pool for 20 years. The pool still lives.

JOBS & EXPERIENCE
Recreation Director
The Arbors Assisted Living Communities at Westbury, Jericho, NY July 2018 - July 2020
As the director, I developed and implemented purposeful recreation services for all residents based on needs, interests and abilities. It was my role to create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and welcoming environment throughout the community. Dance performances, art classes, fashion theme days and even live cooking demo's were all available to the residents while I was in command of the fun. Every day was a balance of 8-12 activities for an elderly population of 100-120. Growing up I spent a lot of time with all four of my grandparents so it was easy for me to maintain an open dialogue with the residents and find out what they truly wanted and needed out of this stage in their life. Laughter, companionship, understanding, the hope that they can still find their happy ending. One thing is certain- no human is ever too old for love.
Program Coordinator
Parker on Madison Social Adult Day Care, Hempstead, NY
Parker Jewish Institute for Healthcare and Rehabilitation
August 2017- July 2018
Developed and implemented all of the center’s daily therapeutic activities. Researched new activities to ensure the programming is
meaningful, engaging, diverse and caters to seniors with & without Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementias. Admission procedures, client screenings, interviews, billing and even toileting- this is where I learned I really could do it all.
Interpreter, Translator & Administrative Assistant
Lincoln Medical Consulting, Bronx, NY
March 2017- September 2017
Provided live-dialogue interpretation between Spanish speaking patients and stress management specialist; including but not limited to psychological evaluations, follow up check-in therapy sessions, relaxation and breathing exercises. All this with a splash of secretary work.
Art Specialist
Art Healing Therapy, South Hempstead, NY
January 2016- July 2018
Taught art therapy based group classes to the patients in various nursing homes in the tri-state area; assisted participants with limited mobility to ensure they were exercising motor skills to the best of their abilities. There is great joy to be found in finishing a painting when you initially thought you could not paint.
Nightly Coordinator
Anti- Rape Task Force, Buffalo, NY
February 2009 - May 2009
As the nightly coordinator for the Anti-Rape Task force I was in charge of setting up safety walk stations at Capen and Lockwook University libraries 3 nights a week. I monitored all the volunteers who signed up to accompany students walking home from the library in the evenings. Maintaining inventory of the safety equipment, recording walk statistics were among some of the other duties performed.
Big Sister
Big Brother Big Sister Youth Mentoring Organization, Buffalo, NY
October 2006 - December 2006
As the eldest of many children, I have always enjoyed being a big sister which is why I decided to join this organization. As a big sister I would travel to a buffalo community school and spend time with my little sister during the after school program. The after school program revolved around arts & crafts.
Relay For Life Participant
American Cancer Society, Buffalo, NY
April 2008, March 2009
In 1998 my grandmother passed away due to Cancer in the gastro-intestinal tract so to me participating in Relay for Life was personal and of great importance. The first year I taught Mini Salsa Lessons with the Latin American Student Association to raise money. The second year the Undergraduate Student Association held a coin drive among the student organizations.
Save Second Base Kickball Tournament
UB Colleges Against Cancer
October 2009
Together with the Organization of Arab Students we joined together to raise money for cancer research. I was the team pitcher as well as the first base player. We won third place even though it wasn’t about the win, we were playing for something larger than our own interests and that was the real prize.
Blood Donor
American Red Cross, Buffalo, NY
February 2007, September 2007, January 2008, April 2008
There was time when I was not able to donate blood because I suffered from anemia. When I was finally able to donate blood it felt like an accomplishment because I had managed to fix myself through dance and nutrition. Knowing that somewhere my blood helped the life of a person in need, that is the true honor & accomplishment.
EVENTS & APPEARANCES
“La Casa D’Arte De Read”
Custom Interactive Art Escape Experience & Exhibition
April 5th, 2025
Now we are a Museum. Now we are a Library. Now we are a place of restoration and creativity. Many gathered and were transported to a different time. There was a typewriter, a record player, crayons for coloring and instruments for playing. Prizes were given away to the guests every half hour just because. And of course there were costumes, wigs and props for people to express themselves without words.
“Into The Te(A)sser Act”
Custom Interactive Art Escape Experience & Exhibition
April 3rd, 2024
Even with a thundering rain hurricane outside and my domain as cold as Alaska, thirteen people gathered together from different states and different time periods for the last supper of 35 and the first supper of 36. Everyone turned into a thief, as they searched for my Wills hidden in my books. All became an Archaeologist as they analyzed the art of my history and the history of my art. Instruments came off the shelf, songs were invented, dances were performed. Letters were exchanged. We ate the fruit salad and custom garbage platter I prepared along with the surprise additions from the guests; artesenal bread made by hand, the most luxurious chocolate mousse cake, and cookies of all shapes and sizes. We ate with our hands. We toasted with passion fruit juice. Spirits were not needed for we knew the invisible choreography of love.

My main role as coordinator was to be the liason between the 21 International clubs on campus and the Student Association executive board & the coordination and execution of multi-cultural events that affected a student body of 37,000. Every two weeks I am the sole person in charge of planning and facilitating meetings attended by the executive board members of the International Clubs. I maintained detailed records of each club's events, community services, fundraisers and meetings. The budget of $25,000 was used to coordinate events promoting international culture throughout the University. From booking venues, renting equipment, ordering custom tshirts, to developing judging criterias, finding eligible judges, developing the score sheets, creating registration forms and even obtaining a food permit- all aspects of planning events were tapped. Soccer Tournaments, Dance Competitions, Olympic Relay Games, Iron Chef Battle Cheese | Battle Peppers | Battle Coconut. For some of the events I got a chance to coordinate with some of the offices on campus. I had the pleasure of meeting people from all parts of the world- I ate with them, I danced with them, and I saw that deep down we are all the same. Same bread, just different spices and condiments.
